Our Current Bean

Nicaragua: San Juan del Rio Coco Cooperative (UCASJRC)

We have, to our great pleasure, sourced a delicious bean from the San Juan del Rio Coco Cooperative in Nicaragua. Originating from the northern mountains of the Madriz province, this is the second Nicaraguan coffee we have offered, and it is another excellent reminder of the exceptional quality of Central American coffees. These strictly hard beans are grown in the Segovia region between 800 - 1350 meters and are mixed of varieties of Catuai, Caturra, and Bourbon. This bean is well suited for light, medium, as well as our special dark roast; look for hints of chocolate, and toasted almond, with reasonable acidity.

Nicaragua has a rich history, intimately bound with coffee production and we highly recommend a brief history search over your morning cup to help appreciate the flavor. The San Juan del Rio Coco Cooperating was founded in 1993 and is a large cooperative comprised of around 553 growers from 15 Nicaraguan Communities. The UCASJRC cooperative maintains high quality coffee and environmental and social responsibility as a priority; investing in community development through both educational improvements as well as grower utility improvements.

Notes:

** Because of quality concerns, The Pepper Peddler chooses to roast only 100% Arabica beans that are "Strictly Hard Bean" (SHB), which is the same mark in other countries as "Strictly High Grown" (SHG).
